Google Talk

Google Talk is one of the newer competitors for the IM market. It was launched in 2005, following AIM in 1997 and MSN Messenger (nowWindows Live Messenger) and Yahoo Messenger in 1999. So far, it lags far behind those well-known services in users. In January 2008, for example, Windows Live Messenger had 235 million unique visits, while Google Talk had fewer than 5 million

 Google announces free calls from Gmail for all US service members
Google has recently announced that those serving in the US military are now able to able to make free calls home. The free calls come by way of the calling from within Gmail functionality and have just a few minor requirements with the first being that a .mil email address is required. That being saidGoogle rumored to be testing voice calls from Gmail
According to some of the latest internet chatter, you will soon be able to make voice calls from within Gmail. As you would expect with any rumor, Google has not offered anything official as of yet, however according to CNET;
“Google is testing a Web-based service within Gmail that will allow users to place phone calls from their in-boxes. It’s launched from the Google Chat window on the lower left-hand side of a Gmail page and allows users to place and receive calls from within their contacts through a user interface that strongly resembles the one used in Google Voice.”

Of course, in reality, this could be the reasoning behind last years purchase of Gizmo5. Then again, this is not the first time we have heard word of voice calling in Gmail and given that I am going to reserve me excitement until this actually begins rolling out.
